
James Mercer Langston Hughes is an American poet, activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. One of the early innovators of the new literary art form known as jazz poetry, Hughes is best known as the leader of the Harlem Renaissance. He wrote about the period when "blacks prevailed", later interpreted as "when Harlem was popular". Growing up in a series of Midwestern towns, Hughes became an outstanding writer from a young age. He moved to New York when he was young, where he made his career. He graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio and soon began studying at Columbia University in New York. Although he dropped out of school, he caught the attention of New York publishers, first The Crisis magazine, then book publishers and became known within Harlem's creative community. He eventually graduated from the University of Lincoln. In addition to poetry, Hughes also wrote plays and short stories.
